ILA Future Lab // Hall 2 / Booth 203+204

How will we fly in the future? How can we make aircraft greener? What is the Next Big Thing that will disrupt the aerospace sector?
The ILA Future Lab was launched to provide a first look at the aerospace technologies that have the potential to change our world, how we travel and how we do business. Hosted by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), the ILA Future Lab EXHIBITION features cutting-edge research. Visitors can also join the dynamic talks at the ILA Future Lab FORUM, where aerospace leaders and the world’s top experts on aerospace innovation will delve into the industry’s most urgent – and fascinating — issues. The forum is hosted by the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI), supported by STARBURST, featuring startups and their pitches, talks, industry insights, panel discussions, even science slams. Innovators welcome! Visitors are invited to join the dialogue in person or follow via livestream.

The Future of Turbofans

VIDEO LINK

Over the history of commercial aviation, tremendous progress has been made in improving efficiency and reliability of aero-engines. And although it is recognized that this trend is nearing the asymptote, it is also agreed that probably another 10-15% fuel-burn efficiency could be achieved before the “classical” turbofan architecture will have exhausted all of its potential. This panel will provide the views of the major European and Academia on how to get there, before we actually move to other radical architectures.

ILA Science Slam

VIDEO LINK

  • Marta Filipa Cortesao, DLR
  • Dr. Daniel Kanzler, Applied Validation

Exhibition HALL 2 / BOOTH 203
BMWi ILA Future Lab EXHIBITION
BMWi ILA Future Lab EXHIBITION

Hosted by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), the Future Lab Exhibition features cutting-edge technologies in space and aviation. The exhibits are taken from research projects co-funded by the BMWi that showcase the strength and competitiveness of the German Aerospace sector in four distinct areas of innovation:

DIGITALIZATION AND CONNECTIVITY

The megatrend of digitalization in industry has also reached the aerospace sector. Innovative digital solutions enable us to take new approaches – from virtual development to predictive maintenance and optimised use of airspace. The Ministry’s LuFo aviation research programme is helping to shape the future of digital aviation and Industry 4.0.

DISRUPTION/ DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION/ COMPETITIVENESS

The strong innovative capabilities of Germany’s aviation industry ensure that it remains internationally competitive. But beyond this, new, innovative ideas and disruptive business models are key to safeguarding its technological lead and to creating value added and good job opportunities for the future.

ECO-EFFICIENCY

Sustainability is a crucial issue for the future of society and industry. We need green innovation if we are to cope with future growth in traffic whilst also preserving natural resources. Eco-efficiency is thus a key focus of the Ministry’s funding programmes and represents a vital investment in the mobility of the future.

SPACE FOR EARTH

Space technologies allow to identify and to document changes in the land surface, oceans and atmosphere on a continuous basis – for example through the German-French cooperation MERLIN. Satellites provide vital services for our economy and society. Protecting them from risks like space debris is a goal the experimental space surveillance radar GESTRA. Digitalization, automation, commercialization and miniaturization are transforming space activities. Recent trends like 3D printing of parts and rising data transfer rates enable new business models in space (the new space economy). All of this is summarized in the Ministry’s strategic motto “Space for Earth”.
