DLR is Germany's national research center for aeronautics and space. It’s Institute of Planetary Research – the biggest of its kind in Europe – is participating at several international missions that explore the planets, satellites and small bodies of the solar system. Two important projects are the international research alliance »Planetary Evolution of Life«, led by DLR, and the EU funded study »NEO-Shield«, dealing with the mitigation of Near-Earth asteroids possibly threatening the Earth. For those, and other, projects the institute is developing experiments and is designing instruments for space applications in cooperation with the industries. The institute is a worldwide renowned authority in planetary geodesy, the modeling and mapping of the solar systems’ bodies.
